A captivating, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring an intricate Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting on gold leaf, depicting daily life along the various stations of the Nakasendô 中山道 (Central Mountain Route) during the Edo period. This route was one of the five major routes of the Edo period, and one of the two that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto. It included 69 stations (staging-posts) traversing the provinces of Musashi, Kōzuke, Shinano, Mino, and Ōmi. The painting portrays travellers, both on foot and horseback, engaging in activities at well-known establishments and sites along the route during different seasons. Scenes include travellers wading through a mountain pass while snow falls near a column inscribed with ‘Nakasendô Kisô Street Road’ 中山道木曽街路, crossing rivers, and boarding a large boat. There are glimpses of a noble court and visits to establishments renowned for their specialties. One station features an otsu-e poster in front of a depiction of ‘Oni No Kannebutsu’ 鬼の寒念仏 (demon in priest robes), referring to the last station of the Nakasendô, Ôtsu-juku 大津宿. These scenes are encased within rich gold leaf clouds adorned with dots in low relief, adding depth and texture to the artwork. Period: Japan – Mid-19th century - Bakumatsu period (1853-1867).
