Hellenistic silver Face of Silenus
Greek god of Drunkenness and Wine
He was a companion of the wine god
Dionysus, and from the 5th century B.C.E.
The name Silenus was applied to
Dionysus’ foster father, thus aided the gradual absorption of the Satyrs and Sileni into
the Dionysiac cult.
The depiction of Silenus that you described seems to be from the 5th century BC.
The attention to detail and the finely modelled face with a strong expression align with the artistic style of this period. It was a time when Greek art flourished, and artists sought to capture the essence and character of their subjects in a realistic and lifelike manner. The depiction of Silenus with his distinct features and the use of ivy leaves as a symbolic element reflects the artistic conventions and cultural significance of the time.
