"Sintram and his companions" a romance translated from the German of De La Motte Fouque and ill. by Heywood Sumner - Seeley Jackson, London - 1893 first UK edition - 18cmx15cm - condition: good, original decorated binding, minor rubbing, name to ffep, all illustrations present

Fouqué's inspiration for this folk tale (originally published in 1814) was the engraving of The Knight, Death and the Devil by Dürer. As Undine represented spring, so Sintram represented winter and the whole story shivers with ice, snow, frost and bitter winds. Set in the late Middle Ages, it is a product of Fouqué's deep preoccupation with Norse literature, culture and mythology.

John Henry Newman and Charlotte Mary Yonge both praised Sintram and his Companions. William Morris also became an admirer of Sintram and his Companions, and it influenced Morris' own fiction.

Sintram and his Companions and Undine are referred to in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott; the character Jo mentions wanting them for Christmas in the first chapter of the book and finally receives them in chapter 22. Aslauga's Knight as well as Sintram and his Companions and Undine are referred to in Jo's Boys, the final book in Alcott's Little Women series, where the story of Aslauga's Knight mirrors the character Dan and his affection for gentle Bess

Boeken in goede orde ontvangen, dank.

Everything fine – the envelope was a bit torn, but the bubble wrap protected the book well. Thanks.

Fast delivery and well-packaged (luckily, because the courier just slammed it through the mailslot). Always happy buying from this seller!
