Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan. He then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. In 1948, he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research.
Erwitt traveled in France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951, he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France.
While in New York, Erwitt met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy Stryker, the former head of the Farm Security Administration. Stryker initially hired Erwitt to work for the Standard Oil Company, where he was building up a photographic library for the company, and subsequently commissioned him to undertake a project documenting the city of Pittsburgh.
In 1953, Erwitt joined Magnum Photos and worked as a freelance photographer for Collier’s, Look, Life, Holiday, and other luminaries in that golden period for illustrated magazines. Throughout his career, which spanned three quarters of a century, he worked for a variety of journalistic and commercial outfits.
In the late 1960s, Erwitt served as Magnum’s president for three years. He then turned to film. In the 1970s, he produced several noted documentaries and in the 1980s, 18 comedy films for Home Box Office (HBO). Erwitt became known for benevolent irony, and for a humanistic sensibility traditional to the spirit of Magnum.

Elliott Erwitt werd in 1928 in Parijs geboren uit Russische ouders en bracht zijn jeugd door in Milaan. In 1939 emigreerde hij met zijn familie via Frankrijk naar de VS. Als tiener woonde hij in Hollywood, waar hij interesse kreeg in fotografie en werkte in een commerciële donkere kamer voordat hij ging experimenteren met fotografie aan het Los Angeles City College. In 1948 verhuisde hij naar New York en verruilde zijn schoonmaakwerk voor filmlessen aan de New School for Social Research.
Erwitt reisde in 1949 met zijn trouwe Rolleiflex-camera naar Frankrijk en Italië. In 1951 werd hij opgeroepen voor militaire dienst en voerde hij verschillende fotografische taken uit terwijl hij diende in een eenheid van het Army Signal Corps in Duitsland en Frankrijk.
Tijdens zijn verblijf in New York ontmoette Erwitt Edward Steichen, Robert Capa en Roy Stryker, het voormalige hoofd van de Farm Security Administration. Stryker huurde Erwitt aanvankelijk in om voor de Standard Oil Company te werken, waar hij een fotobibliotheek voor het bedrijf opbouwde. Vervolgens gaf hij hem de opdracht om een project uit te voeren om de stad Pittsburgh te documenteren.
In 1953 sloot Erwitt zich aan bij Magnum Photos en werkte als freelancefotograaf voor Collier's, Look, Life, Holiday en andere beroemdheden in die gouden periode voor geïllustreerde tijdschriften. Gedurende zijn carrière, die driekwart eeuw besloeg, werkte hij voor verschillende journalistieke en commerciële organisaties.
Eind jaren zestig was Erwitt drie jaar lang president van Magnum. Vervolgens ging hij over op film. In de jaren zeventig produceerde hij verschillende opmerkelijke documentaires en in de jaren tachtig 18 komische films voor Home Box Office (HBO). Erwitt werd bekend om zijn welwillende ironie en om zijn humanistische instelling, kenmerkend voor Magnum.
