Yamamoto Shunkyo was born in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture in 1872. He was japanese-style painter from Meijito early Showa period. Shunkyo studied under Nomura Bunkyo and Mori Kansai. Yamamoto distinguished himself as a representative of the new generation painters in Kyoto along with Takeuchi Seiho and trained the next generation. In 1899 he started teaching at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, later becoming a professor at the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting. He was an exhibitor at the Bunten and also judge, and showed his work at many of the Teiten. In 1917 he was honored as an Imperial Household Artist. He died in 1933 when he was 61 years old.
Yamamoto painted many spectacular landscapes, incorporating the realism of Western art while keeping alive Maruyama Okyo’s style of painting. Yamamoto Shunkyo valued landscape painting above figure painting, especially loved mountains and winter scenes. He liked hiking and sketching from nature.
Yamamoto Shunkyo’s works are in the collections of the Adachi Museum of Art, Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Seattle Art Museum, among others.
