Scorpions – Fly To The Rainbow
- is the second studio album by the German hard rock band Scorpions.
The album was released in 1974 and marked an important phase in the band's development.
Formed in Hanover, Germany in 1965, Scorpions have undergone many changes in their line-up and musical style over the course of their long career. At the time of the release of "Fly to the Rainbow" the band consisted of Klaus Meine (vocals), Uli Jon Roth (lead guitar), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar), Francis Buchholz (bass) and Jürgen Rosenthal (drums).
"Fly to the Rainbow" was released by RCA Records in November 1974. It followed their 1972 self-titled debut album "Scorpions" and was the first album to feature Uli Jon Roth as lead guitarist. Roth would later become known for his unique and virtuosic guitar style.
The album "Fly to the Rainbow" marks a transitional period for the Scorpions, as they evolved from their previous bluesy hard rock sound to a more complex and progressive style. It still contains elements of blues and hard rock, but it also shows influences from classical music and progressive rock.
Notable songs on the album include "Speedy's Coming," "They Need a Million," "This Is My Song," and the title track, "Fly to the Rainbow." These songs showcased the band's versatility and their experimental approach to songwriting and arrangement.
Although "Fly to the Rainbow" was not the commercial breakthrough album for the Scorpions, it is still an important milestone in their career. It laid the foundation for the band's future musical development and established them as a serious force in the rock scene.
Uli Jon Roth's Guitar Playing: Uli Jon Roth's guitar work on this album is often considered outstanding. His melodic and technically demanding soloing contributed to the uniqueness of the album and influenced many subsequent guitarists.
"Fly to the Rainbow" remains a treasured album in Scorpions' history and among fans of hard rock and early heavy metal. It shows the band in a transitional period as they developed their own unique style and were on their way to international recognition and success.
