First Edition. This volume deals with trees. A single volume, forming part of WorldCat / OCLC: 7252814.
Six beautiful uncoloured engraved fold-out plates (complete).
Contemporary full vellum with hand written titles to the spine. Binding is in good, clean condition with just a touch of marking / darkening. There is a stain to the top portion of the rear board.
Internally in beautiful condition. The pages and plates are clean and bright, mostly without flaws. There is a light damp stain to the top edge of the last couple of pages, which probably corresponds to the stain on the back board. It seems it is possibly an unread copy.
This was the first comprehensive Dutch work on natural history, originally published in 37 volumes. Although this claims to be based on the 'Systema Naturae' by C. Linnaeus, in fact it is a compilation of similar works in other countries.
Houttuyn classifies all known plants, animals and minerals, but in contrast to Linnaeus, he gives detailed descriptions of each species.
Maarten Houttuyn (1720-98) was from Hoorn in North Holland. He was a doctor and clergyman, following in the great tradition of clergyman taking an interest and knowledge of Natural History.
