Originally derived from the Hindu goddess ḍākinī, Dakini Ten is depicted here riding a white fox, a form that reflects her syncretism with Japanese folklore and spirituality. Dakini Ten, introduced to Japan through Esoteric Buddhism by the monk Kūkai during the early Heian period, evolved from a demon figure in Hindu tradition to a deity revered for granting blessings such as love and prosperity. The imagery of riding a white fox symbolizes her connection with Inari shrines, where she is often worshipped alongside Inari Okami. This piece features a finely crafted Dakini Ten statue with intricate details, including a golden sword. The figure showcases traditional Showa-era artistry, with delicate hand-painting and elegant patterns on the deity's attire. The fox figure, which is detachable at the tail, complements the divine imagery and emphasizes the association with Inari's messengers. The statue is housed in a wooden zushi (Buddhist altar cabinet) with a red and black exterior, providing a fitting setting for the piece. The cabinet also contains a printed image of Dakini Ten riding a white fox, which has some stains. The statue exhibits minor signs of age, such as slight scuffs, small paint chips, and a weathered finish, consistent with its vintage nature. The fox's tail is detachable, and the wooden zushi shows signs of wear, including scuffs, stains, and minor marks. Please refer to the photos for further details on the condition.
