This captivating hanging scroll, titled "Pine Trees and Mist," is an ink painting by Iwakami Seiryo, a renowned Japanese artist specializing in traditional sumi-e (ink painting). Born in 1915 in Ibaraki Prefecture, Seiryo studied at Kawabata Art School, where he received classical training in the Maruyama school of Japanese painting. Over time, he developed a profound interest in the spiritual aspects of Eastern art, which led him to focus on sumi-e, exploring its depth and mystique.

Seiryo's works have earned high recognition, including the prestigious Minister of Education Award for his painting "Japan's Enchanting Beauty." His accomplishments also include the Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1990, and his work "Night Plum Blossoms" is part of the British Museum collection. A respected figure in the art community, he has served as the head of the Japan Ink Painting Association and continues to exhibit his works at venues such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Ginza Matsuzakaya.

This scroll showcases Seiryo's delicate brushwork and mastery of ink gradients, with a tranquil scene of pine trees enveloped in mist, embodying the serene beauty of Japanese landscapes. The scroll has the artist's signature and seal, as does the original wooden storage box. The scroll ends are made of bone, and it comes in a protective double wooden box, with a small repaired crack at the corner of the outer box.
