PAUL REBEYROLLE
Galerie Maeght
"Guerrilleros"

Original lithographic poster of the exhibition ‘Guerrilleros’, organised by the Galerie Maeght in Paris in 1969. In perfect condition. A- (fine - tiny imperfections). Size: 78 x 56 cm.

Paul Rebeyrolle is a French painter, sculptor and lithographer born in 1926 in Eymoutiers. After studying in Limoges, he moved to Paris, where he discovered classical and contemporary painters. He is linked to the New Figuration movement. Paul Rebeyrolle was part of the Manifesto of the Witness, led by Jean Bouret, who advocated a return to realism. In 1948, he took part with other artists in the exhibition ‘The Witness’ at the Galerie du Bac, which was at the origin of the Young Painting movement. In 1949, Paul Rebeyrolle organised the ‘Salon de la Jeune Peinture’ with Pierre Descargues, Denys Chevalier, Philippe Cara Costea and Gaëtan de Rosnay. The first edition took place in 1950 at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts. In 1953, Paul Rebeyrolle became a member of the French Communist Party. However, the invasion of Hungary by the Russians in 1956 led him to break away from the party. He then painted ‘So Long, I Hope’. In 1959, the committee of the first Paris Biennale commissioned him to paint a painting that would adorn the staircase of the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Paul Rebeyrolle's work is a call for freedom. Art is a means for the artist to stand up against injustice, to denounce the alienation and oppression of man and in this sense, his works are committed. In 1968, he also began a series of so-called ‘political’ works. In 1963, he left Paris and settled first in Aube, then in Côte d'Or, where he died in 2005.
