Tiger Tateishi: The Retrospective (Chiba City Museum of Art, 2021).

250-page paperback art book, 215 x 29,7 cm
Text in Japanese, but with a foreword & titles of works in English / hundreds of images

A superb 2021 catalog for an exhibition honoring the 80th anniversary of Tateishi's birth (born 1941; he died in 1998). It includes a lot of work never seen.

The book comes with a postcard book from Tiger Tateishi: 23 cards published by the Tagawa Museum of Art, bound in a little book. A few of the cards feature images from the book "A Tiger in the Land of Dreams" (1984).

TIGER TATEISHI

Tiger Tateishi (1941-1998) was a Japanese artist who lived and worked in Milan between 1969 and 1981. A painter, mangaka, illustrator and ceramicist, Tateishi stood out for his eclecticism in the art scene of the second half of the last century, beloved by gallery owners such as Alexander Iolas and appreciated by companies such as Alessi and Olivetti.

Unable to be pigeonholed into one style or artistic movement, Tiger Tateishi was a multifaceted and imaginative artist, capable of reworking and converging in a syncretic universe the symbols of Asian culture, both Japanese and Chinese, with the Western artistic influences he was most passionate about, such as Pop Art, Anti-Art, Cubism, Surrealism and Metaphysics.

For Tateishi, the Italian years were undoubtedly the most painterly prolific. In the decade of the peninsula's great political upheavals, Tiger Tateishi was able to carve out a space of his own in Milan's teeming cultural scene, becoming a much sought-after collaborator with some of the most important artistic figures of the time, first and foremost Ettore Sottsass, in whose studio he worked from 1971 to 1974.
