This charming sculpture of the Madonna with Child was designed in 1929 by Stef Uiterwaal (1889-1960) for Glasfabriek Leerdam. The sculpture is made of opaque glass with a luxury satin finish and was the first work carried out by Uiterwaal for the factory in Leerdam. The Madonna and Child sculpture is contained in the original fitted box, extremely rare in this condition after more than ninety years! The Madonna is signed on the back of the figure "G S U L" (Stef Uiterwaal - Glasfabriek Leerdam). An interesting effect can be created by placing the figure on a white or coloured lamp. (See photos). (This small lamp is not included). This sculpture of the Madonna with Child was made in various sizes. This exceptional example is the largest, measuring 37cm. high and weighs 2125 grams exclusive box (box 450 grams). A tiny flaw can be seen on the Madonna's right shoulder where she was at some time probably bumped. The mark is not on the surface, therefore no chip or roughness, but just under the glass surface it is almost invisible. (See last photo). The condition of the sculpture is near MINT with only very slight scratching on the base due to movement. THIS EXTREMELY RARE ITEM IS A REAL BEAUTY!
