【Product details】

This exquisite jewelry box is crafted by Aigami Toshiro (Juho) from the Aigami Lacquer Workshop, a renowned Wajima lacquerware studio established in 1894. Aigami Toshiro has received top honors at the Ishikawa Prefecture Modern Craft Art Exhibition and has been featured in prestigious exhibitions such as the Nitten and international craft shows.

The box features a black lacquer base decorated with maki-e designs of maple leaves and cherry blossoms. In Japanese culture, the maple leaf symbolizes elegance and the beauty of seasonal change, capturing the essence of autumn. Cherry blossoms represent renewal and the fleeting beauty of life, a hallmark of spring. These motifs are delicately rendered in gold and silver maki-e, a traditional technique where precious powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer for intricate designs. The interior is fully lined with velvet, enhancing its luxurious feel.

Wajima lacquerware, produced in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is famed for its high quality and durability. A key feature is the nunokise technique, where raw lacquer mixed with rice glue is applied to the wood base, reinforced with cloth. The undercoating, made with lacquer and fired diatomaceous earth, is layered multiple times to ensure sturdiness. Each piece of Wajima lacquerware is produced through 124 steps, resulting in products known for their beauty and durability. It has also been designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.

The jewelry box is in excellent condition. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its state.
