ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Saffah, AH 132-136 / AD 749-754. Silver Dirham al-Kufa, AH 132 = AD 749/750.
On the obverse, the inscription reads: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ, meaning "There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him." In the margin, it says: بِسْمِ اللهِ ضُرِبَ هَذَا الدِّرْهَم بِالْكُوفَةِ سَنَةَ اثْنَيْنِ وَثَلَاثِينَ وَمِائَةٍ, translating to "In the name of Allah. This dirham was struck in al-Kufa in the year 132."
On the reverse, within three concentric circles, the inscription reads: مُحَمَّد رَسُول الله, meaning "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." The margin contains the following: مُحَمَّد رَسُول الله أَرْسَلَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ, which means "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it prevail over all religions, even though the unbelievers may dislike it." This phrase is taken from the Qur'an, Surah Al-Tawbah (9:33). This dirham was struck in the first year of the first Abbasid caliph, al-Saffah.Reference: Album 211, SICA III, 1178.
