A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, whose real name is Ralf Winkler, was born in Dresden in 1939 and initially worked in East Berlin in divided Germany. Penck's paintings are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also considered the father of the "Neue Wilden," an early 1980s movement with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
A multiple Documenta participant, Penck has won many art awards and is represented in many major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
The history of TTT
Each musician of the band TTT (Triple Trip Touch, loosely translated: Three on the way to touch) is assigned a T. With this the EGO is eliminated and the musician fulfills his task in the piece of music, which he develops solo or with other T`s in this just improvised structure. The resulting piece of music is an expression of the zeitgeist of the era as well as the motivation of the musicians about the instrument.
The band was founded as such in 1984 by A.R. Penck alias Ralf Winkler, Frank Wollny and Heinz Wollny in New York. New York was the starting point for many new T`s such as Lawrence Butch Morris, Reverend Frank Wright, Billi Bang Walker, Denis King Charles, Frank Lowe, William Parker, Jeanne Lee, Clarence c Sharpe and Lile Ellis.
From London the band toured in France, England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Brazil, Ireland, Denmark and Finland. After Heinz Wollny took up residence in Ireland, Frank Wright was brought to Rotterdam and lived there as a session musician in the Thelonius Monk Club. Willem and Coen Albert were at his side.
After the death of Frank Wright, The new TTT played with Alan Silva, Butch Morris, Louis T.
Moholo, Jeanne Lee and Gunther Hampel, among others also in the Stadtgarten Cologne. Through friendship with Ingo Kümmel Jesus Kanneloni and later Frank Köllges joined the band. After Ralf (A.R. Penck) stayed in Ireland, Markus Lüpertz took over from A.R. Penck on the piano.
Manfred Schoof, Gerd Dudek, Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Ryan Carniaux, Samuel Dühsler, Karl Degenhardt, Benjamin Weidekamp, were the new line-ups with which TTT made guest appearances. Once a year, at the end of the summer course, the Academy of Fine Arts, directed by Markus Lüpertz, gave a concert in Kolbermoor.
Penck played piano and guitar and was a jazz musician.
As a drummer and pianist, his music tended towards freedom, with long experimental improvisations that hardly seem to stick together from moment to moment and are best revealed on the macro level. Much of Penck's playing has a raw beauty, a kind of raw and unfiltered play that does not always push forward. Penck recorded with Frank Wollny mainly as TTT (Triple Trip Touch). With TTT, Penck and Wollny recorded albums with Frank Wright, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Jeanne Lee, Alan Silva, Billy Bang, Frank Lowe, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Peter Kowald, among others.
Altogether about 30 different Art-Cover`s were designed by A.R. Penck.
