Published in Taisho 3 (1914) by the Nihon Fuzoku Zue Kankokai, "Nihon Fuzoku Zue" is a 12-volume series compiling woodblock prints depicting Japanese customs from the Edo period. This offering includes volumes 1 through 5, each featuring works by notable artists:
Volume 1: Wakoku Hyakujyo (One Hundred Women of Japan) by Hishikawa Moronobu, showcasing diverse depictions of women from various social classes, including noblewomen, samurai wives, merchant wives, and townsfolk.
Volume 2: Wakoku Shoshoku Ezu (Illustrations of Various Occupations in Japan) by Hishikawa Moronobu, portraying craftsmen, merchants, and other professionals of the era.
Volume 3: Hyakunin Jorou Shinazame (One Hundred Courtesans Evaluated) by Nishikawa Sukenobu, illustrating courtesans and their attributes.
Volume 4: Ehon Tokiwagusa (Picture Book of Everlasting Grass) by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting various customs and scenes from daily life.
Volume 5: Yamato Kousaku Eshou (Illustrated Book of Japanese Farming) by Ishikawa Ryusen, focusing on agricultural practices and rural life.
Hishikawa Moronobu (1618–1694): Recognized as the first great master of ukiyo-e, Moronobu played a pivotal role in establishing this genre, which depicted the entertainment districts and urban life of Edo-period Japan. His works laid the foundation for subsequent ukiyo-e artists.
Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671–1750): A prominent painter of the Ukiyo-e school, Sukenobu was also a renowned book designer in the Kyoto–Osaka area. His works are celebrated for their detailed portrayal of women's lives and fashions during the Edo period.
Ishikawa Ryusen (?–1712): A disciple of Hishikawa Moronobu, Ryusen contributed to the ukiyo-e tradition, focusing on themes such as agriculture and rural life, thereby expanding the genre's subject matter.
Each volume is accompanied by a hardcover. Please note that these covers exhibit significant wear and are included as a bonus.
