TASTING NOTES
Barca Velha 1991 has a bright, deep and very intense red color. The aromas of very ripe fruit (blackberry, plum, cassis), flowers (violets), spices (vanilla, pepper), balsamic (cedar) and aromas of evolution in the bottle (pharmacy and iodine) predominate. In the mouth, it presents an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity, with a very persistent, fine, elegant and delicate finish. One of its main characteristics is its highly structured body, which will provide it with remarkable longevity.
VINIFICATION
Barca Velha is vinified in the Quinta da Leda winery. The selected grapes are vinified by separate varieties or in batches, chosen by hand, in the vineyard and/or at reception in the cellar. The fully de-stemmed and gently crushed grapes are sent to stainless steel vats and/or robotic presses, for maceration and alcoholic fermentation, with intense pumping over, under automatically controlled temperatures. A long maceration was carried out to allow the quality constituents of the ripe grape skin to pass into the wine. At the end, and at the moment "required" by each variety/lot, the wine was incubated and its masses pressed, with the wine resulting from the pressing being preserved separately from the wine.
MATURATION
The wines that potentially create a Barca Velha, are transported to V.N.Gaia, immediately after maceration, and begin their «elevage» or maturation for around 1-1 1/2 years, in new French oak wooden barrels, with 225 liters of capacity. The final batch is prepared based on the continuous selection of the best wines, after numerous tastings and analyzes carried out during maturation on the different batches and existing barrels. To preserve its highest quality, the wine is bottled without treatment and the formation of deposits is natural.
SERVE
Ideally, the bottle should be placed "on high" the day before and opened 2 to 3 hours before serving. With so many years in the bottle, the wine must be carefully decanted to separate its natural sediment. Serve between 16oC-18oC.
