A charming polychrome terracotta figure (ca. 1900) depicting a blacksmith with a hammer in his hands. Signed: "J. Pilar, Rothneusiedl, Wien", "Made in Austria", "Reproduction Reserve" and marked with the number 109 above the stand, which refers to Johann Pilar's ceramics studio located in Oberlaa, on the outskirts of Vienna. The "Made in Austria" and "Reproduction Reserve" stamps indicate that this sculpture was produced for export.

Johann Pilar listed in the 1906 catalog of pottery manufacturers "Adressbuch der Keram-Industrie" (published by Verlag von Muller & Schmidt in Coburg):

Roughly speaking, Johann Pilar's ceramics studio was established in 1898 and employed 50 employees. The studio/shop was located in Oberlaa; another suburb/division of Vienna (quite close to Rothneusiedl)

The height of the sculpture is 48 cm
