【Product details】
This exquisite lacquer art panel, created by the renowned lacquer artist Tsukata Toshio, features a stunning depiction of peacocks, crafted using a combination of raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and maki-e (a technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer). The peacock, a symbol of beauty, dignity, and compassion in many cultures, is often associated with nobility and renewal. In Japan, peacocks are also linked to the goddess Kannon, representing mercy and compassion. The raden technique involves inlaying pieces of delicate mother-of-pearl shell into the lacquer to create shimmering designs that catch the light.
Tsukata Toshio was born in Yamanaka, Ishikawa Prefecture, on March 31, 1937. While attending night school, he also trained in industrial arts, learning traditional lacquerware from his father, Tsukata Tadashi. He first gained recognition in 1953 when his work was accepted into the Contemporary Art Exhibition. In 1975, he founded Tsukata Art Company, and his works were exhibited at prestigious events, including four times at the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). He received several notable awards throughout his career, including the Chubu Craft Grand Prize in 1990 and the Special Award for Art and Culture in 2018. He passed away on December 7, 2020, at the age of 83.
The artist's seal is visible in the bottom left corner of the panel. The surface is in excellent condition, though there are two small tears on the paper backing. Please refer to the photos for further details.
