Landscape with six figures: in the right foreground, a man leaning on a staff and addressing another man seated on a rock in front of him; beyond, at centre, three figures reclining on a river bank, and further on the right, a standing figure; in the background, a small town on the right bank, cliffs on the left bank, and mountains in the distance, at centre. 1741

Dr Richard Mead was so renowned, Watteau came from Paris for a medical consultation. Doctor of medicine, and great collector in many fields. Prints from his collection can be recognised by pen annotations along the top on the verso of the form "7 Nt Lt 1" (see 'Print Quarterly' XII 1995, p.78).
Dr Richard Mead was a physician to George II from 1727. He helped to establish the charity, The Foundling Hospital, for orphans in London, and was a prolific collector.
