Founder of the High Order of the Black Eagle
King Frederick I of Prussia, the grandfather of Frederick the Great, the "Old Fritz", founded this highest Prussian order the day before his coronation.
An eight-pointed star forms the basic shape of the breast star of the order's cross. The medallion in the middle shows a black enameled eagle and the motto of the order in the circle. This motto, "Suum Quique"/ To each his own, became the leitmotif of the liberal Prussian state.
The most famous recipients of the High Order of the Black Eagle include the scholar and university founder Wilhelm Freiherr von Humboldt, the politicians Karl August Fürst von Hardenberg and Heinrich Friedrich Karl Reichsfreiherr vom und zum Stein, the general Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst, the later Reich Chancellor Paul von Hindenburg and the painter Adolph von Menzel.
The High Order of the Black Eagle was awarded until 1945 and entitled its bearer to bear a hereditary title of nobility. Since 1945, the High Order of the Black Eagle may only be awarded to members of the House of Hohenzollern.
