Today, Makonde art is admired all over the world. It has produced magnificent and unique works, but we should not forget that what we find on the stalls of curiosity dealers in Abidjan and Korhogo, in Lagos and Kinshasa, can also be found in Dar el Salaam, Nairobi and Mombasa - carvings that tourists can take home as inexpensive souvenirs of happy hours in the African sun.
But if we want to talk about the art of the Makonde tribe, other criteria apply - completely different ones. Art! Who can actually define this term? There are still no generally recognised criteria, but - and here I am on solid ground - there are indeed criteria for MASTERPIECES OF THE MAKONDE.
This sculpture is undoubtedly a masterpiece from the Dr. Rieck Collection, which was assembled in the 1990s. Riek had intensive contact with Dr. Max Mohl, the author of "Masterpieces of the Makonde", 1995.
