Japan's Pinnacle Recognized Worldwide: PILOT

In the mid-1890s, Ryoosuke Namiki, a graduate of a marine school, embarked on a career as an engineer on cargo ships involved in international trade. Inspired by the numerous imported goods he encountered, he dreamed of creating something from Japan that could be proudly presented to the world. His passion and curiosity bore fruit when he became a professor and obtained a patent related to ink storage. In 1918, he established Namiki Manufacturing Company and began the production and sale of fountain pens, marking the beginning of a global journey.

After a study tour in Europe, Namiki developed a method for manufacturing fountain pens using lacquer to prevent the aging of ebonite. He established the "Kokkoukai" (National Light Society) with Gonroku Matsuda, who would later become a Living National Treasure. The "NAMIKI" brand quickly gained worldwide recognition, including a sales agency contract with the globally renowned brand "Alfred Dunhill" in Europe.

Each Maki-e fountain pen, taking over three months to complete and involving as many as 130 processes, is a masterpiece. It is a testament to Japan's traditional craftsmanship and the high level of perfection recognized globally.

Pilot Fountain Pens continued to astonish the world with innovative ideas, such as the world's first capless fountain pen, the "Capless." While outsourcing parts manufacturing has increased, Pilot remains one of the few companies, including the top three manufacturers in Japan, that performs alloy casting domestically. Furthermore, Pilot developed a unique technique for blending and welding iridosmine balls, the metal used for pen points. This was first achieved in Japan in 1914 and has since remained a rare in-house development worldwide. Iridosmine, almost as hard as diamonds and notoriously difficult to shape, is a rare metal known for its exceptional hardness and resistance to wear. Pilot's stable pen points, smooth writing experience, and durability stem from this material.

The name "Pilot" signifies a "navigator" who stands at the bow of a large ship, embodying the spirit of overcoming challenges and forging strong bonds. The company emblem features a life buoy, symbolizing this spirit.
