Okinawa 1961 - 1970

Tatsuo Kurihara
Asahi newspaper company/1970/Japanese/253*183*10

Photographs by Japanese photographer Tatsuo Kurihara. Tatsuo Kurihara is one of Japan's leading journalists and documentary photographers. He grew up in downtown Tokyo, where his father was the father of a town factory. He went to the prestigious private Kaisei Junior and Senior High School, but changed schools because he was not satisfied with the examination-oriented education. He then decided to become a photographer to highlight the evils and contradictions in the world through photography. He went on to study politics and economics at Waseda University, with an eye on news photography, and joined a photography club. There, he worked as an assistant to the pioneer of news photography, Hiroshi Hamaya, and participated in the scenes of struggles across the country. After graduation, he worked in the photography department of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and became a freelance photographer in 1967. Since then, Kurihara Tatsuo has worked as a journalist covering Okinawa, Japanese coal mines and other areas with his own body of work, and from the 1970s onwards he temporarily emigrated to the USA, after which he became actively involved not only in journalism but also in the creation of documentaries. This book is a collection of works set in ‘Okinawa’, published in 1970. It is a valuable book that describes in detail the actual situation in the region during the 10 years leading up to the mainland.
