A very beautiful and perfectly preserved illuminated manuscript in Latin on vellum from a "de luxe" Book of Hours [France (Paris?), late 14th century (2nd? quarter)]. Two conjugated leaves - four pages (bifolium) mounted back to back, framed and glazed in a double-sided modern frame (could be seen and/or hanged from either side). It is written in Latin in fine textura (Gothic) script with brown-black ink on vellum. Dimensions of each leaf - 14.5 x 10 cm. 18 lines of manuscript on each page. Ruled space (the dimensions of the manuscript lines) on each page - 8.5 x 5.5 cm. A bottom inscription on one of the pages, apparently added later. The text on a left ivy-leaf and gold decoration border on each page, one page with a extra bird on a leaf and one page with a extra wild animal on a leaf. Two large, double-line, illuminated puzzle initials (one in burnished gold with blue and one in burnished gold with white and blue) with gold and blue extensions into the margin and 12 smaller, single-line, fine flourished initials (six on every page - six in burnished gold and six in red and blue), giving a total of 14 illuminated and flourished initials on the manuscript. Further red and blue flourishing at the end of each paragraph to the end of the line (to the end of the ruled space) - 14 in total, seven on each page. The manuscript was preserved in a very fine condition, there are no visible faults, apart from two needle-like punctures towards a lower corner that could only be seen in the light. The frame and the glaze are in very good condition and it is ready to be hanged. Dimensions of the frame - 28.5 x 23 cm. PLEASE NOTE: - This item will be shipped from UK.
