Antique microscope by R. Winkel Göttingen and is in the original wooden box with accompanying key.
Very beautifully finished heavy brass microscope and bears the number 14783. The device is tiltable.
The dimensions of the wooden box are: height 36cm / length 19cm / depth 21cm, weight including box 6.5 Kg
Rudolf Winkel was born on September 4, 1827 as the son of a teacher in Göttingen and was forced to drop out of his grammar school at an early stage due to the early death of his father.
In 1870 the first larger microscopes came from Göttingen, they were examined by Prof. Listing, he compared them with the then very renowned English instruments and certified Winkel a better quality of his instruments than those from the British Isles.
In 1874, Winkel's workshop moved to a separate room in Göttingen. In 1872, the eldest of Winkel's three sons had joined the company as an apprentice.
Rudolf Winkel is said to have personally checked every instrument in his workshop and to have hammered a microscope for the slightest irregularities.
