Jean Célestin Tancrède Bastet (1858-1942),(Student of Alexandre Cabanel) - A portrait of an elegant Parisian lady

Jean Célestin Tancrède Bastet (1858-1942) Portrait of an elegant Parisian lady Period: 1897 Medium: Oil on canvas Provenance: From a private French collection Overall size with the frame is 80cm x 70 cm x 6 cm and the painting measuring 62 cm x 52 cm . A large wonderfully bright oil on canvas portrait of a Parisian lady in fashionable attire by the eclectic French genre painter Jean Célestin Tancrède Bastet (1858-1942). The portraits by the artist are very rarely available to the market and this is a very striking example of the painters portrait work . You can imagine the choice of background colour and tonality somehow representing an extension of the sitters unique personality as she sits for the artist who captures her cultivated glance which seemingly hold back her smile. Condition report: The painting displays excellent bright tonality and is largely in original but cleaned and unlined condition without any repairs to the verso. There are a few areas of well - blended retouches and areas of craquelure commensurate with its antiquity. The painting is presented within an ornate gilt frame from the period. Please refer to the notes below regarding frames. Jean Célestin Tancrède Bastet attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble, where he was a student of Aimé Charles Irvoy , then the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel where he was admitted to compete in 1885, without success, for the Prix de Rome . Bastet was by nature an eclectic artist who used a wide range of mediums used and techniques including drawing, watercolor, pastel, oil. Bastet is probably best known as a portrait painter of genre landscapes and portraits including nudes, The painting offered is an excellent example of his work. Bastet was also a teacher of painting and his many pupils included Henriette Deloras . Bastets work is held in a number of important collections Worldwide and mainly in France where there are a number of his paintings held in collections including the Grenoble Museum , the Dauphinois Museum , the Museum of the Former Bishopric of Grenoble, the Bourgoin-Jallieu Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon .
