Henri Picou (1824-1895), Circle of - Putti lors d'une bacchanale reposante

Henri Picou (1824-1895) (Circle of) Title: Putti lors d'une bacchanale reposante Medium: Oil on canvas Period 1870-1900 Provenance :From a leading UK dealership and Private French collection Overall measurement with the frame is 134 cm x 87 xm x 7 cm and the painting measuring 122 cm x 86 cm. A spectacular and very large 19th century oil on canvas painting which we think maybe from the Worksop of the French artist Henri-Pierre Picou (1824-1895) . The painting offered is very close in style to Picou's work and warrants further research. In classical art Putti are often used as an art form to display by their actions life forces, emotions, sensations - the spirit expressed in a scene. They were frequently part of a Bacchanal, usually very busy and active but in this quite unique study the putti appear to be restful , contented and blissfully enjoying the sunshine and the wine! Henri Pierre Picou was a pupil of Delaroche and Gleyre. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1847 and was awarded second prize in the Grand Prix de Rome in 1853. He also received a silver medal in 1857. Picou executed frescoes in the church of Bon Secours in Nantes. Picou's style was noticeably influenced by the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre and many of his paintings follow classical and mythological subjects. Picou also received commissions for large religious frescoes from many churches, including the Église Saint-Roch. Condition report: In excellent original unlined condition with no repairs to the verso. A few very small scattered marks but overall in lovely condition for its antiquity. Please note: The frame is being provided to you at no additional costs so that when your artwork arrives at your house you can immediately display it on your wall. As such any damages to the frame itself, that do not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request a cancellation. We would also point out that whilst we insure all paintings before shipping that we have no control over shipping once we have sent the painting . The successful bidder will be responsible for paying any import duties and any associated VAT in the country of destination . Please refer to the auction terms regarding this before bidding. All of the art that we sell is insured for shipping ( subject to the above ). All shipping is professionally packed. Please Note: Studio/Gallery photos of paintings on an easel on the published material are intended only to represent accurately the size of the painting within that room environment. Also refer to the shipping costs and note the auctioneers disclaimer regarding potential customs charges . We cannot calculate these as they are levied in the country of destination and the amount payable is determined by customs there and not by ourselves or the auctioneers. We have experienced some customs charging higher than expected import taxes; so we would advise bidders to attempt the establish the likely excise duties that your own National customs will charge you before biddIng.
