Item Description
This is an antique Boro (also known as Ranru) textile from the Meiji period, composed of patched layers of old cotton fabrics. Originating from the Tohoku region of Japan, where cotton was a precious material, this type of fabric was used extensively. The intricate layering of patches and stitching, known as "sashiko," was a method used to repair and reinforce the fabric, which was worn down from daily use. This piece reflects the traditional practice of repurposing worn-out materials for clothing, undergarments, or bedding. As a result of continuous use and patching, the fabric became a stunning representation of unintentional beauty, with multiple layers creating a unique texture and pattern.
