島岡達三 Tatsuzo Shimaoka Jomon Inlay Cup and Saucer
Tatsuzo Shimaoka is one of Japan's leading ceramic artists, and his works are highly acclaimed both at home and abroad. Influenced by the Mingei movement, he pursued his own unique beauty using natural materials and traditional techniques.
He has also been selected as a Living National Treasure of Japan.
The Jomon inlay seen in this cup and saucer is a technique in which a Jomon pattern is carved into the surface of pottery and clay of a different color is embedded in the carved area. This technique creates a three-dimensional effect and color contrast on the surface of the vessel, and beautiful patterns emerge. Tatsuzo Shimaoka has revived the ancient Japanese Jomon period technique of inlay in modern times.
The pale blue and white gradation is finished with a beautiful glaze, and the natural flow of the glaze and the subtle colors that can only be produced by hand are attractive.
Since it is a handmade work, no two pieces are the same.
