Technique: Original woodblock print Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro (1898-1991) Titled: "Nikkō Yōmeimon no yuki" 日光陽明門の雪 (Sun gate at Nikko in snow) Japan - Heisei period (1989-2019) Snow at Yomei Gate, first year of publishing 1952. This is a later version from the Heisei period (1989-2019) Carver: Nagashima Printer: Harada Shiro Kasamatsu was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata. In the 1950s he published bird and animal prints, landscapes and "famous views" with the publisher Unsodo. Alltogether more then 100. Shiro Kasamatsu worked in Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga style. (More modern) In the lower right corner (outside the woodcut) you can see a small notch. This is the so-called "Kento", and characteristic on this site for the publisher Unsodo. Kento is the registration system traditionally used by Japanese makers of woodcuts to ensure that the different colors (each color is applied through a separate log) are properly aligned. See the picture. Signed - Shiro, lower right, with the signature in the print. This print comes from the original plates made for publisher Unsodo. It is as good as new. Never been framed. You really see the expertise from the printer in the way the light from the firework falls back to the trees and sky background.
