"Nihon Gaishi" (Japanese Foreign History) is a historical book on national history written by Sanyo Rai in the late Edo period (gaishi means a history book written by a private citizen). It is a history of the rise and fall of samurai families from the Genpei clan to the Tokugawa clan, and is written entirely in classical Chinese. In 1827, it was presented to Matsudaira Sadanobu, the head of the Genro (elderly councilors) who had connections with Sanyo, and two years later, all 22 volumes were published jointly by three bookstores, including Akita-ya in Osaka. Since the Meiji period, several companies have published versions translated into colloquial Japanese. It was the most widely read history book from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.
