Beeldje, Atlas - 30 cm - Gepatineerd brons
Atlas is one of the founding myths of the titans of Greek mythology. He is the son of two primordial deities, as well as the brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus. After defeating the Titans, led by Cronus, in the battle against the Olympian gods, Atlas was condemned by Zeus to support the celestial sphere on his shoulders for eternity.
Representations of the titan are known dating back to Classical Greece, and Renaissance representations of it are inspired by ancient models. Numerous drawings, paintings depict and sculpt him as a bearer: he assumes a decorative support function as "Atlant". The caring figuration carries the orb mythologically, but spread this selling point in symbolism and clarity.
The figure of Atlas is used as a stand for a clock, a map of the world, or a cup, but our statue bears no trace of these uses.
Our only mythological statuette thus exists with titanic strength doubled by the weight of the world it carries on its shoulders. Her small size seems to contrast with the brute force represented here. They are the fruit of a true goldsmith's work through the finesse of casting and shaping the copper or bronze sheet ???
