Takayama kô'bô'dansu小棒箪笥 (klein ladekastje met een vergrendelingsstang) - Japan - Meiji periode (1868-1912)

A striking lacquered wooden Takayama kô’bô’dansu 小棒箪笥 (small cabinet of drawers with a locking bar) in one section. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed in Japan. The exterior and drawer fronts are crafted from indigenous ‘kuri’ wood (Japanese chestnut wood), showcasing an amazing reddish-orange Shunkei lacquer finish that highlights the refined wood grain pattern. This type of lacquer begins as yellow-orange and matures into a beautiful red-orange over time, as seen in this cabinet. The cabinet is configured with a pair of sliding doors, three stacked drawers protected by a vertical safety bar, two additional drawers of different sizes, and a hinged door opening to reveal three more small drawers. The small drawer on the right is a ‘panel’-type drawer, typical of Takayama cabinets, Smooth running drawers and doors and a lot of volume, for easy storage. The drawers are fitted with elegant ‘hirute’-shaped hand-forged iron bail handles. The thumb grips of the sliding doors are chrysanthemum-shaped with a small embossed design of a rising sun. The cabinet is further equipped with small circular lock plates and the locking bar with a small fan-shaped applique. The sides feature charming iron ‘warabite’-shaped bail ‘totte’ (grip handles). Dimensions: Height 78.5 cm, Width 76 cm, Depth 39.2 cm. It is in a very good completely restored condition with some traces consistent with age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. Including two keys, functioning like the old fashioned Japanese way, not very smooth. These type of cabinets originate from the mountain town Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
