DESCRIPTION:
Own a Piece of History - Vintage 1920 WW1 Trench Watch

The wristwatch found its way onto men's wrists during wartime due to its practicality and convenience. This transition began in the Boer War and became widespread during World War I. Soldiers favored wristwatches because they allowed them to keep their hands free for other tasks, in contrast to the cumbersome pocket watch.

These early wristwatches, known as "trench watches" or "wristlets," adapted to the demands of trench warfare. They often featured protective guards over their crystals, which were made of fragile mineral glass. These guards were designed to shield the watch face without obscuring the numerals, although they sometimes made reading the time more difficult. Despite this, the elegant yet practical design was a hallmark of the era.

After WWI, wristwatches quickly became fashionable in civilian life, shedding their exclusive association with femininity and instead becoming symbols of masculinity and bravery, reflecting the soldier's spirit. This shift represented not just a practical evolution in watch-wearing but also a significant cultural change.

Some of the innovative designs from the wartime period did not endure. For example, Enicar's watch with a teardrop-shaped case and integrated compass was a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution, but it did not become a standard feature in later watch designs.

Since the mid-20th century, watch designs have remained relatively stable, with many contemporary watchmakers continuing to draw inspiration from their historical models. While the protective crystal guards disappeared with the advent of shatter-resistant Plexiglass in the 1930s, the fundamental concept of the wristwatch as both a functional and fashionable accessory endures to this day.

The watch is running and is in good condition with traces of wear. Please note: the watch looks better in real than in the pictures that have been taken in macro mode so that defaults are amplified. The watch is in good condition considering its age and is fully genuine. The dial has been restored.

The history of maintenance is unknown, but the watch runs with acceptable precision given its age.

Please note: Pictures are never retouched. Descriptions are done with care and honesty so that what you see and read is what you get.

Shipping with UPS / DHL with tracking number. I do NOT speculate on shipping costs.

Antwoord van de verkoper

I'm sorry to hear about the issue with the second hand of the clock falling out of place. Vintage watches are indeed less sturdy and more delicate, and it seems that the transportation may have taken a toll on it. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are willing to cover the cost of the repair, or alternatively, we can also offer a refund. Please let us know how you would prefer to proceed.

Superbe montre, conforme à la description, envoi rapide et soigné Merci
