Original woodblock print - Paper - Utagawa Kuniteru II (1829-1874)- Miya 宮 - From the series "Suehiro gojūsan tsugi” 末廣五十三次 (Fifty-three Stations of the Suehiro) - Japan - 1865 (Genji 2/Keiô 1)

Toyohara kunichika is name ‘Kunichika ga’ 国周画” in his signature

-from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Fan(Suehiro 53 Station Meisho)-
In 1863, the 14th Shogun Iemochi of the Edo Shogunate went to Kyoto for the first time in 229 years since the 3rd Shogun Iemochi to announce the opening of the country to Emperor Komei. The appearance of following an armed procession of more than 3,000 people shocked the Japanese at that time in the late Tokugawa period, and the appearance is also depicted in the Tokaido paintings published at that time, which are called “Gojo Raku Tokaido”. I will. Suehiro Fifty-three Stations (Suehiro Fifty-three Station Meisho Zue) is one of them.
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka(月岡芳年), Yoshiiku Ochiai(落合芳幾), Sadahide Utagawa(歌川貞秀), Hiroshige UtagawaII(2代目歌川広重) , Kunichi Toyohara(豊原国周),Utagawa Kuniteru(歌川国輝) and others shared the paintings.
It was published in the Keio 1 period (1865).

From around Bunkyu(1861-1864), he started drawing activities under the name of the second generation Utagawa Kunitsuna(歌川国綱II) or Ichiransai Kunitsuna(一蘭斎国綱). It is believed that he changed his name to Kuniteru(国輝) around the first year of Keio (1865). In the days of Kunitsuna’s name, he was active in caricatures, street objects, and actor paintings. Since he became Kuniteru, he has drawn kaika-e such as “Tokyo Famous Places(東京名勝)” and “Tokyo Scenic Beauty(東京名所図会)”, including “Tokyo Twelve Views(東京十二景)”, a collaboration with the fourth generation Utagawa Kunimasa. There are quite a lot of railroad pictures such as “Tokyo Shiodome Railway Steam Locomotive Traffic(東京汐留鉄道蒸気車通行図)”, and the depiction of the steam locomotive is drawn by observing it much more precisely than other painters.
