The place where important personalities had begun to be buried beyond royalty in 1885 with the burial of Victor Hugo.
In 1918, a book was written with all those killed in combat and placed in the Pantheon. The result was not as expected by the president of the French Memory, nor by a large part of the people; so the protests about it began, getting the pressure to force the Chamber of Deputies to definitively approve the burial as such, on September 12, 1919. Even so, the act would be delayed for another year.
On November 11, 1920, the unknown soldier arrives alone at the Arc de Triomphe. His body is buried there until weeks later he is buried and decorated by the Legion of Honour in the presence of the British Prime Minister and the entire French Government.
Three years after the arrival of the Unknown Soldier to the Arc de Triomphe, André Maginot, Minister of War, lights a flame in his honor that has remained burning to this day. Since then, daily, one of the 900 associations of French ex-combatants has rekindled the flame in a ceremony held every day at 18:30.
