This elegant octagonal kogo (incense container) features a beautiful makie design depicting three flying birds and naruko (bird chasers) on a black lacquer base. Naruko are traditionally used to scare away birds and animals, made from bamboo or wood, and produce sound with wind or human movement.

Michiba Soko, born in Ishikawa Prefecture, comes from a renowned lacquerware family specializing in tea ceremony utensils. He learned lacquer techniques from his strict father and is highly regarded within the Yamanaka lacquerware tradition. Michiba Soko continues to be an active and celebrated lacquer artist.

The lid of the box has an inscription and a stamped seal.
