Icoon - Verheerlijking op de berg Tabor - Eitempera op levkas op paneel - Palech

Very fine late 18th century Russian Transfiguration icon from the Old Believers village of Palech. The famous scene of Jesus appearing in heavenly light on the Mount Tabor in the company of Moses and Eliah, whilst StJohn, StJames and St Peter lie down blinded by the light is rendered here in fine miniature painting resembling a medieval book of hours. Unusual is that the painter also depicted Jesus climbing the mountain with his disciples and descending from the mountain again. Also the scenes in the upper right and upper left corner, were angels ask the prophets Moses and Elijah to come down to accompany Jesus are unusual.
The artist succeeded extremly well in bringing the message to the spectator that the light that radiated during this moment was unbelievable strong and beautyfull. The blueish green and ochre rocks in typical Palech fashion, are covered with striking white highlights. The color sceme of this icon is impressive. The icon can best be enjoyed with candle light when the gold background of the icons reflects the candlelight. An extraordinary work of art in good state of preservation. The panel has some historical bora holes that a treated. Size 31,75 x 25,75 cm
