William Nesfield (1793-1881) - Finchale Abbey ruins, Durham, England

I am offering for auction a superb 19th century watercolour titled Finchale Abbey, which is in Durham, north east England, by listed artist William Nesfield, 1793-1881. Signed bottom left. Nesfield paintings fetch very good prices and are sought after. The painting measures 25 x 17 cm. The frame measures 50 x 34 cm. Condition of the painting is good. Please view all photos for accurate condition. Ready to hang. William Andrews Nesfield was born in Durham; the son of rector. He was educated at Winchester, Trinity College Cambridge and Woolwich, before serving in the Peninsular Wars under the Duke of Wellington. He retired from the army in 1816 and began a career as a landscape painter, making tours to the Alps in 1822/23 and to Scotland, Wales, Yorkshire, Northumbria and Ireland in 1841. From 1842 he lived near Regent's Park. Initially combining painting with landscape gardening, he eventually relinquished his work as an artist. From 1836, he produced garden designs for over 260 estates, including redesigning the arboretum and several arbors and vistas at Kew Gardens in 1844, and designing the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1860. Please nore. I am on vacation until 2nd May 2024 so all paintings will be posted as soon as I return. Please note. Due to the fragile nature of old frames and glass, our shippers do not provide insurance for any damage caused during transit. We go to great lengths to ensure each painting is packed and protected to a very high standard but sadly cannot compensate or refund for any damage occurring to frames or glass during transit. Therefore the frame and any glass is a gift to you with zero value and you are bidding on the artwork only. Due to Brexit, there are delays at EU customs borders though the situation is improving. Please do not blame me for delays or any customs duty payable. I really appreciate your understanding and patience. Steve.
