This is one of Japan's famous traditional crafts known as bamboo basket lacquerware, and it is a square tray made of bamboo. Bamboo basket lacquerware 籃胎漆器(らんたいしっき) is a type of lacquerware made by weaving bamboo to create a base, applying lacquer 漆(うるし) to it, and repeating the process of drying and polishing. When applying the lacquer, there are two methods: one is to highlight the weave of the bamboo, and the other is to cover the weave and add separate decorations on top. Lacquerware is also referred to in English as "Japan," and it is one of Japan's representative traditional crafts. The origin of the term "Japan" dates back to as early as the 16th century. Portuguese explorers who ventured around the world during the Age of Discovery arrived in Japan, initiating trade with the country.
