'Tesshu Yamaoka was a Japanese samurai and swordsman also famous as the founder of the 'Muto-ryu shool of swordsmanship.He is also known for his role in the bloodless surrender of
'Edo.
Additionally,he was a master of Zen and calligraphy known as one of the 'Three Ships of the Bakumatsu along with 'Kaishu Katsu(1823~1899) and 'Deishu Takahashi(1835~1903) His calligraphy is filled with dynamism and vigor,seemingly embodying the spirituality of his swordsmanship.
