Magnificent figure of Saint Teresa in ecstasy. Made in the ivory and fine wood carving schools in the centre of Italy (or Northern Europe) in the 17th century. The iconography is strongly influenced by the painting and the sculpture of that time, as can be seen in the face details. The ivory has been masterly carved, as shown in the robes, the raising hand towards the Holy Spirit, the impressive perspective and the vigorous volume of the piece. 

Dimensions: 55 mm (figure) / 120 mm (with an Elizabethan pedestal made of ebonised wood and details in mercury gilded bronze). 

The seller guarantees the ivory used in this lot is antique, it was tooled before 1947 and can be sold and resold under the CITES treaty. The seller will therefore also include a signed statement.
