Very rare 1940 Yoruba sculpture from the private collection of a former Italian ambassador in Accra, Ghana.
In wood, bronze, natural fibres, shells, horn and feathers.

Always kept in a closed case, no dust, great condition.

The god 'Eshu' is one of the 16 main gods of the great Yoruba people in the southwest of Nigeria. 
descended from Ikole-Orun, and the Chief Enforcer of natural and divine laws, he is the Deity in charge of the law enforcement and orderliness.
Also called 'trickster god': he can do good, but also bad. He is easily recognised by his long braid.

This tribal artwork is very old, made of hard wood, carved in the typical Yoruba style.
Brown patinated wood and  traces of African ochre. On the face the unmistakable signs (3 scars) of recognition of the Yoruba culture.
Designed as a sort of "spiritual container" for magical forces used by wizards and fortune tellers for various purposes within the community. The figure with the hands resting on the belly.
