The packaging is a real design classic and consists of a simple, square flask, identical with the ground plan of the Place Vendôme in Paris. The austere packaging helps to keep the attention focussed on the perfume and is described as ageless, authentic, modern at the same time.

Chanel Nº5 is a perfume of French fashion house Chanel. It is the first perfume that was developed by Russian-French chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux commissioned by Coco Chanel in 1921. Both the scent, which for the first time doesn’t immediately remind of flowers, and the marketing, with the minimalist name and square flask, have by now become iconic. Nº5 is still one of the best selling perfumes.
According to history, Chanel decided at one point that her fashion house also needed its own perfume. She had already made a name with the sales of her women’s suits, subtle dresses and sportswear. The new perfume should liberate the female from flowers scents, the reason why Chanel asked Ernest Beaux to create a perfume, as she thought that a female should smell as a female and not like a flowers.[4] Based on this, Beaux created two series of perfumes: one was numbered 1 through 5, the other 20 through 24. Chanel chose the fifth perfume without hesitation. She brought it to market in 1021 on the fifth day of the fifth month as she also believed that 5 was a lucky number. And it indeed became a great success.
