Outstanding modello attributed to Allan Ramsay. (Edinburgh, 13th October 1713 - Dover, 10th August 1784), 

RARE Oil painting acquired from estate and attributed to Allan Ramsay with an exceptional finish, oil on panel, size: approx. 26 x 29 cm. (1750-1755).

Allan Ramsay, son of the poet Allan Ramsay, is the principal representative of the generation of English portrait painters who prepared the classical era of Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Privileged portraitist of King George III. The Scottish artist had already painted the sitter, when he was Prince of Wales in 1758 for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, Ramsay's most important patron in London and the tutor and mentor of George III.

This model painting was expertly appraised by the expert Samuel Weiss in France, in Marseille, and then by world specialists of Allan Ramsay. Bought from a private collection of a Scottish family. The sitter of this modello by A Ramsay was actually identified as Richard Grenville, 2nd Earl Temple with help of National museum of Scotland which makes it a unique piece prior to the painting; now on display at the Victoria Museum in Melbourne. This small panel that bears graticules around the perimeter to facilitate the transfer on a larger canvas was obviously intended for the approval of the sponsor. The Scottish origin is proven by the descendants of the CHARTERIS family. The old frame, dating from the 1960s, had a banner-like label stipulating family membership and inherited around 1960 from a descendant of this family who had married and had settled in Limousin on that date.
