On 14 April 1629 Christiaan Huygens was born in The Hague. He was a prominent mathematician and physicist. He also had a passion for astronomy.

Astronomy and also positioning at sea required accurate time measurements, which Huygens dedicated himself to. He studied the movement of pendants and in 1656 he had a patent on the first pendulum clock. He was the first to use an anchor escapement. In the work Horologium Oscillatorium sive de motu pendulorum (1673) he described the theory of the movement of a pendulum. He was also the first to find the formula for the period of the mathematical pendulum. Following the pendulum, the floating balance was created.

After his dead on 8 July 1695 there are still clocks made under his name Christiaan Huygens, like this special copy.

The well-running Franz Hermle 2 jewels timepiece, equipped with a hover balance, strikes a bell on the whole and half hour. The clock also has its own serial number 1406, M6. The beautiful drawing, around the timepiece and the moon position, shows a scene that dates back to the time when Christiaan Huygens made his inventions and was of great value for time and astronomy.
