In Tibetan Buddhism, light is seen as an element filling the universe on different levels. It is meant to lead the deceased to the higher realms of happiness, and is one of the pleasant consequences of life after death.
It is a very important offering in Tibetan rituals. Buddhists fill these butter lamps with yak butter where they stick a wick.
