Beautiful very large original Barong dance mask. Brought to the Netherlands by myself in the 1980s. It is in very beautiful condition.

The Barong represents the gods and the good. In the Calanarang story, Barong, who represents good, fights against the witch Ranga who represents evil. The Barong is also used to purify the village of evil spirits. In a large procession led by Barong one then travels around the village.

The Barong dancer kept the mask with the handles in front of his face while moving the jaws of the mask up and down, this made, during this magical dance, a wild rattling sound.
