Fantastic Oshe Shango Staff – Yoruba – Nigeria

In good condition and with brilliant patina from much handling and long loving care. It dates to the first quarter of the 20th century. On stand.

Provenance: Ex – collection of Pace gallery, New York by way of the Arcade gallery of London. Obtained from there by P. Westerdijk in 1976.

This phenomenally fine carving in hardwood is a classical Shango cult staff used by a female follower. It portrays a kneeling devotee in an attitude of obedient servitude. Her head is crowned with a double ax, the symbol of the thundergod Shango who rides the clouds, sending thunderbolts to earth to show his anger and displeasure when aroused. Here the double axe heads or era edun are supported by two finely executed female heads, a rare extra. Such staffs were carried by followers of the orisha (god) Shango during parades organized in his honor.

Sold with handwritten declaration of authenticity by Dr. P. Westerdijk, museum ethnologist and cultural anthropologist specialized, for over 50 years now, in the study of the material cultures in African nations that live south of the Sahara.
